Frida
This carving was made to fulfill a promise made long ago to a very good friend.
It is carved from one very old, dense piece of golden coloured hardwood that I found on the floor of a wood shed in north Essex. I really don't know what wood it is! Probably Box.
My friend wanted a figurative carving and with only that in mind I began to chip away. The more I worked, the more the figure began to show the signs of the deep damage that runs through its heartwood. The majority of the damage is visible at the back but there is some on the shoulder and some in the area that became the vagina.
The name of the piece suggested itself! It could only be called Frida, in honor of Frida Kahlo. Those who know of her will already understand why.
Hey Russell,
Hope you like how it turned out in the end.
Big love,
K.
