'Sonnet (2)' 30cm x 100cm
This is Sonnet (2) The carving is related to Sonnet for Hope in that it is cut from the same tree and shares themes and treatment. It is different in that it is smaller and visually simpler.
It is the completion of the asymmetric pair along with Sonnet (1).
The work is un-flinchingly romantic but that does not mean it is in any way un-considered.
Any real romantic will tell you that being in love is a devastating condition that rips your life apart, delivers a gaping emotional wound and never ends well.
What happens, do you think, after the “Happy Ending”?
It is only within our power to make the most of the moments we have.
The work is about preserving moments. Revisiting ephemeral glimpses of life that see us through as the rest of our powers and faculties inexorably slip away.
A cut flower doesn't last long. The ripples on water only travel in one direction, outward and into decay of form and the little frog is my witness. She watched me carve this piece while I was in my mother's garden, so I included her.
